Randomly my topic of today will be, of all things, Zac Efron. I'm a 75 year old in a 24 year old body so I am not quite the target demographic for this kid to say the least. That coupled with the fact that I like my men tall, bespectacled and funny as opposed to short, pretty and please-your-mom charming. Anyway those facts combined pretty much means I've missed every one of his movies up until now. I've had no reason to watch them, but now "17 Again" has come on HBO, so about a week ago I figured "what the hell?". Reuben's working, I've got nothing better to do... excuse excuse excuse... whatever.
So anyway, I watch the movie... and basically I guess the statement that surprised even myself is... I get it. I still am not going to have a 13 year old girl OMG moment... nor am I going to think that this kid is the hottest thing to walk the planet. I will say, however, that this guy is talented. I mean really talented. I mean that all things constant, this young man should have a long, happy, healthy career ahead of him.
It's not the blond sweeping hair, not the charming smile, not the dance moves or the style. It has to do with the fact that in this silly man becomes boy becomes man story, this talented young actor really sells it. He has to do some pretty difficult scenes that require some adult emotion and focus, and he really nails it. He takes a story that could be beyond silly and campy and makes it real.
So my post for the day is... young ladies for once you got it right. This is a young man to root for. I may not be among your screaming throng... but here's to you Zac Efron. May you be the next Tom Cruise, hopefully minus the crazy religion and couch jumping.
